It was confusing to be young boy who loved TV and who would grow up to be gay. At the time I didn’t know why I loved certain shows. But, now I know.
I always seem develop a crush on a guy that reminds me of someone from a TV show from my childhood. But, I was never ready for this…
I met Jando during my second year at college. A friend of a friend, he was older and living in the City. He was a performance artist, occasional pot dealer, had the coolest loft I’ve ever seen, and was the spitting image of Robin Williams from his “Mork & Mindy” days. Whether it was his frenetic energy, cool house, or hairy arms, I couldn’t pin-point my attraction. But it was there, despite finding out his true profession.
He was a clown. Not in the “Class Clown” sense, but in a genuine Ringling Brother’s sense…
“Jando the Clown”, people called him!
I was torn between my puppy love for an adorable, young ‘Robin Williams’ and a terror of all things Clown. ‘Robin’ won out and I spent a few great days getting to know him…getting to know him beyond the clown.
I still find myself being attracted to my childhood television stars. I’ve dated ‘Peter Brady’, ‘Almonzo Wilder’, and ‘Ponch’, although now I’m careful to learn more about their actual lives. I’m just waiting to meet my ‘Major Steve Trevor’…hopefully he never worked in a circus.
