We’re holding hands and walking down the middle-school hallway (in slow-motion). He’s grinning that goofy-sideways grin and I’m smiling at every jealous girl I see. “That’s right ladies,” I think “he’s mine. Every mediocre-looking, your-mom-joke telling, 7th-grade-pervert inch of him. He even has a lazy eye… “ *sigh* BRRRRRIIINNNGG!!!
Woops! Thus ended another class and another day-dream about Gene. He was in a few of my classes and he seemed like an attainable goal.
I eventually decided, though he didn’t know it, that it was time for Gene and I to commit. My downhill crash-course in “why desperation is not a good way to get a date” only went downhill from there. I convinced Ashley, a mutual friend, to tell Todd about my crush on him. And then I stooped lower than that.
Much lower. Humiliation sets in as I recall actually writing a note to Gene, describing “Catherine’s feelings for you” and signing it with my friends’ name. Somehow I persuaded Ashley to give it to him. What happened next was a quick climax and resolution. I entered health class and found a group of boys crowded around Gene, laughing at his note. One of them turned to look at me “Do you really like him?” he asked. Gene turned and faced me as well. He wasn’t cute and I knew it. Why risk embarrassment on him?Silence. *gulp* “No, haha…Ashley told me she was going to do something crazy with some…note…thing…haha..” A lump grew in my throat as I watched Todd’s eyes. Would he believe that crap? Apparently he had a lazy eye AND he was dumb. To my relief/dismay Todd actually looked extremely relieved. We all had a “good laugh” (RIGHT!) and life went on.
Fortunately, I was pretty much over Todd within the next fifteen minutes.Of course, it was 7th grade and I was desperate, so two weeks later:
